Mit der Ausstellung Andreas Gursky – Visual Spaces of Today beginnen die Feierlichkeiten des Jubiläumsjahres 2023, in dem zuerst die Fondazione MAST ihr zehnjähriges Jubiläum und im Herbst dann G.D ihr hundertjähriges Bestehen feiern darf. “Making work a culture and culture a work”. These are the words that bind the two organisations together. They represent the longtime, consolidated corporate culture of the company, as well as the innovative and inclusive space it created to promote thought on the topic of work.
Der Kurator Urs Stahel hat hierfür zusammen mit dem Düsseldorfer Fotokünstler Andreas Gursky ein Konzept erarbeitet, das das Motto der Fondazione MAST aufnimmt und weiterentwickelt. Das Akronym MAST steht für Manifattura di Arti, Sperimentazione e Tecnologia und entsprechend reflektieren die visuellen Bildräume, die Gursky in seinen Fotoarbeiten kreiert und für diese Ausstellung ausgewählt hat, diese Themenwelten. Sie öffnen sich und geben viele Sichtfelder auf die Arbeitswelt, Wirtschaft und Globalisierung frei, sie öffnen konkreter den Blick auf Produktionsstätten, Warenumschlagplätze, Konsumtempel, Verkehrsknotenpunkte, Energie- und Lebensmittelproduktion sowie die Finanzindustrie.
Andreas Gursky gehört zu den renommiertesten Fotokünstlern unserer Zeit. Sein Name ist zur Marke für Ikonen der Fotokunst geworden, die mit ihren Auktionsrekorden mit dazu beigetragen haben, den Rang der Fotografie als Kunst zu etablieren. Wie fein Gursky dabei die Gegenwart seziert, wie nah er heranzoomt, den Dingen auf den Grund geht und gleichzeitig das große Ganze im Blick behält, ja bestimmende Strukturen und Muster mit Abstand erst offenlegt, zeigt sich in seinem Markenzeichen, seinen grossflächigen visuellen Kompositionen. Seine erstaunliche Bildkraft lassen das Betreten seines Bilduniversums jedes Mal zum visuellen Erlebnis und zum Erkenntnisschritt zugleich werden.
Die über 40 Bilder umfassende Ausstellung spannt einen Bogen zwischen frühen Werken und neuesten Arbeiten, legt zwischen Salerno (1990) und Hongkong (2020) große Distanzen zurück und verbindet neuzeitliche Reiseindustrie (Rimini, 2003) mit jahrtausendealten Produktionstechniken (Salinas, 2021). Die Anordnung seiner Bilder bietet Raum und Zeit für ein körperliches, mentales und emotionales Erfahren, Erleben, Begreifen und Verstehen. Die bemerkenswerten Räume der Fondazione MAST, die vom Studio Labics in Rom geschaffen wurden, laden zu diesem Gursky-Schau- und Erkenntnis-Erlebnis ein.

The curator Urs Stahel, together with the Düsseldorf-based photo artist Andreas Gursky, has developed a concept for the exhibition that takes up the motto of the Fondazione MAST and develops it further. The acronym MAST stands for Manifat-tura di Arti, Sperimentazione e Tecnologia, and accordingly the visual image spaces that Gursky creates in his photographic works and has selected for this exhibition reflect these thematic worlds. They open up and reveal many fields of vision on the world of work, the economy and globalization, they open up a more concrete view of production sites, goods handling centers, temples of consumption, traffic hubs, energy and food production as well as the financial industry.
Andreas Gursky is one of the most renowned photographic artists of our time. His name has become a trademark for icons of photographic art, whose auction records have helped to establish the status of photography as art. How finely Gursky dissects the present, how closely he zooms in, gets to the bottom of things, and at the same time keeps an eye on the big picture, even revealing defining structures and patterns only at a distance, is evident in his trademark large-scale visual compositions. His astonishing pictorial power makes entering his pictorial universe a visual experience and a step of insight at the same time every time.
The exhibition of more than 40 paintings spans early works and recent ones, covering great distances between Salerno (1990) and Hong Kong (2020), and combining new-age travel industries (Rimini, 2003) with millennia-old production techniques (Salinas, 2021). The arrangement of his paintings provides space and time for a physical, mental, and emotional experience, apprehension, and understanding. The remarkable spaces of the Fondazione MAST, created by Studio Labics in Rome, invite this Gursky show and cognitive experience.
